Chapter 14

The hotel restaurant was not crowded, but that was probably typical for a week night.

Looking around, Snow found Eva among the mostly empty linen-covered tables. Only, she wasn’t sitting alone.

Snow groaned and took a deep breath, putting on her “doting daughter” mask as she walked to the table.

“Eva, nice to see you,” she said as she pulled out her chair. “And Gary, what a pleasant surprise. I didn’t realize you’d be joining us tonight.”

Shouldn’t she be finished with boring political dinners with her father gone? At the reminder of her dad, the familiar pang seized her chest. She would attend a hundred political functions if it meant her dad was back. Blinking back tears, she cleared her throat and put her game face back on.

Maybe she’d get lucky and they would just order entrées, skipping the appetizers. As the leader of the state’s republican party, Gary lived in Raleigh, so hopefully, he was eager to get back on the road.

“Forgive me, darling,” Eva said with a small smirk, not looking sorry at all. “I must have forgotten to mention it. Gary asked me at the memorial service if he could meet with both of us.”

The state’s memorial service that was a week and a half ago? Snow huffed. Eva didn’t forget, but why would she intentionally not tell her?

“Is there something more we need to do for Dad?” God, she hoped there wasn’t another memorial. Although, now that she had Hunter, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.

“Oh, well, this is a little awkward. I had assumed you would both have time to prepare, but I guess it’ll be alright. Snow, I’m here to talk about the future, not the past.” Gary raised his hand to wave the waiter over. “If you don’t mind, I’d like to go ahead and order. I’m in a bit of a hurry to get home.”

Snow sent up a silent prayer of thanks. “Works for me. I’ve got work in the morning.” And a man to bang.

“Oh, that’s right, you’re teaching now. Very wholesome.” Gary turned to the waiter and placed his order. He waited for Eva and Snow to order before continuing. “What age do you teach?”

“Four-year-olds.”

“That’s, what, a daycare or preschool? Smart move. You never know what you might get in a public school. Amanda and I sent our kids to private. We picked the most expensive one so we didn’t have to worry about who they were associating with, if you get my meaning.”

Snow’s mouth dropped open. She’d always known this guy was a jerk, but wow. “No school is perfect, but North Carolina public schools seem to work well for the one-point-five million students who do attend them. I’m sure the schools would be even better if North Carolina didn’t rank 36th in teacher pay. Pity we can’t come together and find more funding for that.” Snow stared at the man, knowing how many of the recent state budget debates had fallen along party lines. “The pre-K I teach at is public.
